Economist

Magdalene is a senior consultant at Africa Practice East Africa, based in Nairobi. She is a public policy expert with over 10 years of progressive knowledge and expertise in government affairs and strategies. She has developed and driven aggressive growth strategies for development and commercial clients alike, advocating for resource mobilisation and human rights, inter alia. Magdalene is an advocate of the High Court of Kenya and a member of the East Africa Law Society, with certifications in climate change and sustainability, mediation, arbitration, migration policy, regional trade, gender studies, ICT law and policy, sports and entertainment law, and finance, among others. Before joining Africa Practice, she worked in the public policy and regulatory space working with both private and public sector to develop conducive regulatory frameworks that support investment and business development.

Declan Galvin is the Head of Insight, Information, & Intelligence (3i) at WS Insight and an expert on political, security, and terror-related risks in East Africa. WS Insight is a leading risk advisory and security management company working with embassies, private companies, humanitarian groups, and non-governmental organizations.

Declan is a highly experienced investigator, intelligence manager, and analyst supplying commercial and diplomatic audiences with security-information services and risk advisory solutions. Prior to joining Insight, Declan investigated election malpractice in several African countries, managed intelligence networks throughout East Africa, and supported the intelligence priorities of public and private sector clients.

Declan is the Chairman of the Kenya Private Sector Alliance committee on election preparedness and was appointed to the Mkenya Daima Steering Committee supporting peaceful Kenyan elections. He is also on the Board of Governors at the McAfee Institute and Board of Directors for the Professional Criminology Association of Kenya.

He has published analysis or commentary in Foreign Policy Magazine, the Guardian, Democracy in Africa, Nation, The Week Magazine, and DW.

Jared has two decades of experience practising economist in the financial sector, previously serving as the Director of Research and Policy at the Kenyan Bankers Association (KBA) and the Director of the KBA Centre for Research on Financial Markets and Policy®.

For nearly eight years in that role, he spearheaded analytical work on policy and market dynamics to support market deepening and policy engagement. The body of knowledge arising from the research work has supported financial sector players in Kenya and the broader East African in their strategic endeavour to drive the development aspirations of the region.

Jared’s passion and intellectual interest in finance as an engine of development was nurtured at the East African Development Bank where he served as Bank Economist for more than ten years.

Jared holds a Master of Science Degree in Economics from the University of Zimbabwe and a bachelor’s degree in Economics from the University of Nairobi. He also has received post-graduate training in Project Financing Economics from Bradford University (United Kingdom), and Development Evaluation Economics from a joint Carleton University (Canada) – World Bank programme, Jared has also published numerous essays for technical audiences as well as for wider readership.
